エクサスケールを目指すIESPが始まった。Jim Grayは死後出版された記念論文集で「データ科学は第4の科学である」と宣言した。第10回となるHPC Asia 2009が高雄で開催された。RISTの次世代気候モデルの会議がORNLで開催された。 |
世界の学界の動き

1) IESP (Santa Fe, Tsukuba. SC09)
エクサスケールを目指す次世代ソフトウェアの開発のためにPete Beckman (ANL), Paul Messina (ANL), Jack Dongarra (U-Tennessee / ORNL)などがIESP (International Exascale Software Project)を提案した。2009年には3回の会議が行われた。4月はSanta Fe、6月はParis、10月にはつくばで開催された。世界中から80～100名が参加した。日本からの常連は朴泰祐、姫野龍太郎、堀田耕一郎、石川裕、松岡聡、中島浩、佐藤三久、泰地真弘人など。
4月7日～8日にSanta Feで開催された第1回IESP会議のプログラムは以下の通り。かなりのスライドが残っている。

2) 第4の科学 (Jim Gray)
2007年1月、母親の散骨のためにヨットでSan Franciscoから出航したまま行方不明になったJim Gray（マイクロソフト研究所）は、死後出版された記念論文集 “The Fourth Paradigm: Data-Intensive Scientific Discovery” (2009) において「データ科学(data-intensive science)」を、実験科学、理論科学、計算科学に続く「第4の科学」として提示し、データの収集、管理、解析のツールのために研究資金を投入することと、通信と情報発信のためのインフラストラクチャの整備を求めた。かれは、データから知識を抽出することは、干し草の中に落とした1本の針を探すようなものだ、と述べ、データの取り扱いがeScienceの重要課題であると述べている。写真はWikipediaから。

第4回目となるHiPEAC 2009（High Performance Embedded Architectures and Compilers）は、2009年1月25日～28日にキプロス島のPaphosで開催された。2件の基調講演が行われた。

2) ISSCC 2009 (San Francisco)
第56回目となるISSCC 2009 (IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference)は、2009年2月8日～12日にSan FranciscoのMarriot Hotelにおいて”Adaptive Circuits and Systems”のテーマのもとに開催された。4件の全体講演がなされた。

3) HPC Asia 2009（高雄）
HPC Asia 2009 (The 10th International Conference on High-Performance Computing in Asia-Pacific Region)は、2009年3月2日～5日に、台湾の高雄(Kaohsiung)で開催された。ホストは第１回(HPC Asia 95)と同様NCHCであった。APANとの共同開催で「2009年亞洲高速計算(HPC ASIA)暨環太平洋先進網路會議(APAN)」という表題であった。HPC Asia 2018が2018年1月に秋葉原で開催されるまで、これが最後のHPC Asiaであった。筆者は、OGF26 (Catania, Sicily)と重なって参加できなかった。
4) ARCS 2009（Delft）
第22回目となるARCS 2009 (International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems 2009)は、2009年3月10日～13日にオランダのDelftで開催された。会議録はSpringer社からLNCS 5455として出版されている。
5) 次世代気候モデル開発（ORNL）
RIST（高度情報科学技術研究機構）の主催による最先端並列計算機における次世代気候モデル開発に関わる国際ワークショップは、1999年のハワイ会議から（2012年まで）日米欧を会場に毎年開かれている。2007年と2008年はハワイに戻ったが、2009年は3月16日～18日にテネシー州のORNL (Oak Ridge National Laboratory)で「第11回国際専門家会議：高性能コンピューティング環境における気候変動予測と持続的社会システムに関する次世代モデル構築」として開催された。オーガナイザは同研究所の計算科学担当のThomas Zacharia副所長であった。彼は2017年6月1日からはORNL所長である。2022年12月に退任する。

2009年1月9日に東大情報基盤センターにおいて、「第11回高性能計算機施設に向けた次世代気候及び持続性モデルに関する国際会議（ORNL会議）に関わる準備会合が開かれた。筆者は理研のアドバイザリー会議のため出席できなかった。
筆者にとってORNL訪問は初めてであった。指定されたホテルTownePlace Suites Knoxville Cedar Bluffは、近くにレストランが1～2軒あるかという田舎で、研究所も貸し切りバスで相当走った先であった。研究所そのものは入るのも厳重なチェックがあり、持ち込むPCもMAC Addressまで登録した。プログラムは以下の通り。3日目の所内見学で、計算機室に設置されたJaguarとKrakenを見た。
