HPCの歩み50年（第200回）－2011年(l)－
この連載も200回となった。ご愛読に感謝します。IESP (International Exascale Software Project)の第6回は4月にSan Fransiscoで、第7回は10月にドイツのKölnで開催された。つくばで予定されていたICCS 2011は、東日本大震災のため場所をシンガポールに移した。
世界の学界の動き
1) 円周率
昨年8月に、長野県飯田市松尾代田の会社員近藤茂氏が自宅のパソコンで円周率を5兆桁まで求めたという発表があり、もはや円周率の計算はスーパーコンピュータの独擅場ではなくなった、と思っていたが、2011年4月21日のHPCwireによると、オーストラリアのNewcastle大学の Laureate Professor Jon Borwein率いる、Newcastle大学、LBNLおよびIBM Australiaからなるグループが、Blue Gene/Pを用いて、πの2乗およびCatalan定数の10兆桁以降を、しかも2種の基数で計算したとのことである。使用したのは、ミネソタ州RochesterのIBM’s Benchmarking Centreに設置された4-rack IBM BlueGene/P systemとのことである。
Catalan定数とは、Wikipediaによれば

で、具体的には
G = 0.915965594177219015054603514932384110774
である。それ以前の数字を計算しないで10兆桁目以降の数字を求めたというだけで、どこまで計算したのか書いてないし、計算量は書いてあるが何時間かかったかも書いていない、変な記事である。πには、16進で特定の桁以降を求めるBBP公式があるが、πのべき乗やCatalan定数などにもBBP型の公式が知られている（Wikipedia英語版）。
これに刺激されたわけでもないであろうが、2011年10月16日、件の近藤茂氏が、自宅のパソコンを増強して、円周率を10兆桁まで計算し、Ginnes記録を更新した。昨年10月から開始し、半年ほどで結果が出るはずだったが、HDDが故障したりして、予定の倍の時間がかかった。ことし夏には落雷で自宅一帯が停電になり、緊急用の電源でしのいだが、停電の回復を待つ間、「もう駄目だと思った」と振り返る。産経ニュースによると、パソコンの熱で40度近くに上昇する部屋で、妻幸子さんは「洗濯を室内に干すと早く乾いて助かったけど、電気代が月3万円もかかるのはつらかった」と苦笑いした、とのことである。
2) OpenCFD Ltd. (OpenFOAM)
Imperial College, LondonのHenry Wellerは1980年代後半から、より強力で柔軟な連続体シミュレーションのソフトウェアを研究しFOAMというソフトをC++で開発した。同大学の博士課程に1993年～1996年まで在学したHrvoje JasakはFOAMの誤差解析を行った。2000年にJosakはWellerとともにNabla Ltd.を作りFOAMの商品化を試みた。2004年にNable Ltd.を畳み、OpenFOAMを開発し公開するために、Henry Wellerら3名はOpenCFD Ltd.を創立した。同時にJasakはWikki Ltd.というコンサルティングのための会社を創立した。2004年12月10日にOpenFOAMの最初のリリースが出された。
2011年8月8日にOpenCFD社はSGI (Silicon Graphics International)に買収され、OpenFOAMの著作権は非営利団体OpenFOAM Foundation Ltd.に移行した。2012年には、ESI GroupはOpenCFD Ltd.をSGIから買収した。2014年に、WellerらはESI Groupを去り、OpenFOAM FoundationのもとでOpenFARMの開発を続けている。
3) ニュートリノは光より速い？
2011年9月23日、CERNで発表があり、OPERAのチームによるニュートリノ実験で、ニュートリノの速度が光より速いという実験結果が出たとのことであった。世界中が驚愕したが、2012年2月22日になって計測装置の光ファイバーケーブルの接続に緩みがあったためと判明した。一般メディアでも話題になったが、結局Einsteinの特殊相対論からのずれは確認されなかった。
国際会議
1) ISSCC 2011
58回目となるISSCC 2011 (2011 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference)はSan FranciscoのMarriott Marquis Hotelにおいて、2011年2月20日～24日に“Electronics for Healthy Living”のテーマで開催された。20日はいくつかのForumが開かれた。PC Watchなどに詳しい報告が掲載されている。電子版会議録はIEEE Xploreに置かれている。
2) ARCS 2011
第24回目となるARCS 2011 (International Conference on Architecture ofComputing Systems 2011)は、2011年2月24日～25日にイタリアのMilano工科大学Comoキャンパスで開催された。会議録はSpringer社からLNCS 6566として出版されている。
3) CGO 2011
第9回となるCGO 2011 (The International Symposium on Code Generation and Optimization)は、2011年4月2日～6日にフランスのChamonixの”Le Majestic” congress centerで開催された。主催はIEEE/CS TC-uARCHとACM SIGMICROとACM SIGPLANの他、HiPEAC NoE、NSF、INRIA、Gdr ASR CNRSである。最初の2日に、10件のtutorialsと7件のworkshopsが行われた。基調講演は以下の2件。
