新HPCの歩み（第191回）－2002年(g)－

世界中でグリッド関係の国際会議が多数開催されている。例えばPRAGMAがSan DiegoとSeoulで開かれ、CCGridがBerlinで、iGrid 2002がAmsterdamで開催された。San Joseで開催されたMicroprocessor Forum 2002は、ITバブル崩壊にもかかわらず超高速CPUのラッシュであった。

国際会議

1) ApGrid（Phuket島、タイ）
1月頃、第1回ApGrid Core MeetingがタイのPhuket島で開催された。

2) LinuxWorld & Expo (New York、San Francisco)
2002年1月29日～2月1日に、New York市Manhattanにあるthe Jacob K. Javits Convention Centerにおいて、LinuxWorldが開催された（展示は30日から）。3年前最初に開かれた時と比べるとビジネスライクになり、スーツ姿が目立った。これまではLinuxを売る会社が中心だったが、今回は「隅の親石」がCompaq社、プラチナスポンサーはAMD社、Computer Associates社、Hewlett-Packard社、Intel社、IBM社であった。IBM社は「Linuxは現実のビジネスだ」を標語に乗り込んだ。(CNN 2002/1/29) (HPCwire 2002/2/8)

主催のIDG (International Data Grou)は1月31日に7件のOpen Source Product Excellence AwardsをUniForum Associationと共同して授与した。(HPCwire 2002/2/8)

8月12日～15日には、San FranciscoのMonscone Centerで開催された。Red Hat社やIBM社のようなLinux推進の主役だけでなく、やっとLinuxに入って来たSun Microsystems社や、いわば敵であったMicrosoft社まで多くの社が参加した。(HPCwire 2002/7/12)(HPCwire 2002/8/16)(HPCwire 2002/8/16) この席で、5件の2002 Enterprise Evolution Awardsが発表された。(HPCwire 2002/8/16) 来場者は20070人であった(HPCwire 2002/8/23)。

3) ISSCC 2002（San Francisco）
第49回目となるISSCC 2002 (2002 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference)は、2002年2月3日～7日にSan FranciscoのMarriott Hotelにおいて開催された。電子版の会議録は、IEEE Xploreに置かれている。

John MarkoffがNew York Times紙掲載の記事で、この会議について報告している。「Mooreの法則」は（自然の）「公理」というより、「drag race（自動車の1/4マイルの短距離競争）」になっており、さらに加速している。Intel社は室温において1.66 Voltで10 GHzのクロックを実現し、これは数年後には商品で実用化されるであろうと述べた。IBM社は発熱が問題となるので、むしろ1 GHzでも状況に応じてクロックを調節できるPowerPCチップを開発している。(HPCwire 2002/2/8)

また、Intel社、IBM社や他の半導体企業は、将来のチップはより少ないエネルギーで高速に動作するようになるであろうと発表した。「エネルギーのことを考えなくてもいい時代は過ぎ、今はだれでもそれを考えるようになった」とIBM社のRussell Langeは語った。(HPCwire 2002/2/8)

4) PRAGMA（San Diego、Seoul）
PRAGMA (The Pacific Rim Application and Grid Middleware Assembly)の第1回が、2002年3月11日～12日にSan Diegoで開催された。ホストは、SDSCとUCSDのCatl-IT2。これはNPACI All Hands Meetingに併設して開催された。組織委員長はPhilip Papadopoulos (UCSD/SDSC/Cal(IT)2/CRBS)、副委員長はSangsan Lee (KISTI)。

第2回のPRAGMAは、2002年7月10日～11日に韓国ソウルで開催された。ホストはKISTIで、Grid Forum Koreaに併設されて開催された。組織委員長はSangsan Lee (KISTI)、副委員長は田中良夫（産総研）。

5) ARCS 2002（Karlsruhe）
第16回目となるARCS 2002 (International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems 2002)が、“Trends in Network and Pervasive Computing”の副題で、2002年4月8日～11日にドイツのKarlsruheで開催された。General ChairはHartmut Schmeck、Program ChairはTheo Ungererである。共催はCEPISとEUREL、後援は、ACM、IEEE、およびIFIP TC10である。会議録はSpringer社からLNCS 2299として発行されている。

これ以前は、ドイツ語のタイトルなので、ドイツ語圏のいわば国内会議であったと思われる。これ以降は国際会議の形となっている。

6) IPDPS 2002（Fort Lauderdale、フロリダ州）
第16回目となるIPDPS 2002 (16^th International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium)は2002年4月15日～19日にフロリダ州Fort LauderdaleのMarriott Marinaで開催された。主催はIEEE/CS TCPP、共催はIEEE/CS TCCA、IEEE/CS TCDP、ACM SIGARCHである。19件のWorkshopsと1件のTutorialが行われた。3件の基調講演が行われた。

7) COOL Chips V（東京）
1998年から開催されているCOOL Chips(IEEE Symposium on Low-Power and High-Speed Chips)は、5回目のCOOL Chips Vを2002年4月18日～20日に東京の機械振興会館で開催した。基調講演・招待講演・パネル討論は以下の通り。

8) ICCS 2002（Amsterdam）
第2回となるICCS 2002 (The 2002 International Conference on Computational Science)は2002年4月21日～24日にオランダのAmsterdamにおいて開催された。参加者は約400人。共同議長はPeter Sloot (U. van Amsterdam),　Jack Dongarra (U. of Tennessee), C. J. Kenneth Tan (U. of Western Ontario)の3名である。7件の招待講演が行われた。

9) ApGrid Workshop（台北）
第1回のAsia Pacific Grid Workshop 2001が2001年10月22日～24日に品川プリンスホテルで開催されたのに続いて、the 2nd ApGrid Workshop / Core Meetingが5月14日～17日台北で開催された。

10) ISHPC 2002（原研関西研究所）
4回目となるISHPC (International Symposium on High Performance Computing) 2002は、2002年5月15日～17日に原子力研究所関西研究所（京都府木津川市、現在は量子科学技術研究開発機構、関西光量子科学研究所）で開催された。参加者は147名。基調講演はThomas Sterling、Tony Heyおよび姫野龍太郎であった。 (International Workshop on OpenMP: Experiences and Implementations) 2002とHiWEP (HPF International Workshop: Experiences and Progress) 2002が併設された。会議録はLNCS 2377, Springerとして発行されている。

11) WOMPEI 2002（原研関西研究所）
WOMPEI (International Workshop on OpenMP: Experiences and Implementations)が5月15日に原子力研究所関西研究所において開催された。これは上記ISHPC 2002の一部として開催された。

12) CCGrid 2002（Berlin）
昨年に引き続きCCGrid 2002 (2nd IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid, 2002)が5月21日～24日にベルリンのthe Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (formerly Prussian Academy of Sciences and Humanities)で開催された。General ChairsはAlexander Reinefeld (Zuse Institute and Humboldt Universität, Berlin, Germany)とKlaus-Peter Löhr (Freie Universität, Berlin, Germany)。Program Committee ChairはHenri E. 第29回目となるISCA 2002 (29th International Symposium on Computer Architecture)は、2002年5月25日～29日にアラスカ州のAnchorageで開催された。委員長はYale Patt (The University of Texas at Austin)である。電子版会議録は、ACM、IEEE、IEEE/CSに置かれている。

14) ISC2002 (Heidelberg)
2002年6月19日～22日にHeidelbergで開催されたISC2002については別の章で記す。

15) ICS 2002（New York City）
第16回目となるICS 2002 (the 16th international conference on Supercomputing)は、2002年6月22日～26日にColumbia大学（New York市）で開催された。主催はACM SIGARCH、組織委員長はKemal Ebcioglu（IBM）、プログラム共同委員長はKeshav Pingali（Cornell University）とAlex Nicolau（University of California）であった。3件の基調講演が行われた。

16) Lattice 2002（MIT）
第20回目となるInternational Symposium on Lattice Field Theory（通称Lattice 2002）は、2002年6月24日～29日に米国マサチューセッツ州のMITで開催された。会議録は、Nuclear Physics B – Proceedings Supplements 119 (2003)として出版されている。

17) VECPAR 2002（Porto）
第5回目となるVECPAR 2002（今回から会議名はInternational Conference on High Performance Computing for Computational Science）は、2002年6月26日～28日にポルトガルのPortoで開催された。会場は、Porto大学工学部の新建屋である。発表のうち49論文がSpringerのLNCS, volume 2565として出版されている。

18) HPDC-11（Edinburgh）
HPDC-11 (11th IEEE International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing, 2002.)が、2002年7月24～26日にEdinburgh International Conference Centerで開催された。GGF5に接続して開催された。2件の基調講演が行われた。

19) WOMPAT 2002（Fairbanks、アラスカ州）
WOMPAT (Workshop on OpenMP Applications and Tools) 2002が2002年8月5日～7日にアラスカ州FairbanksのAlaska大学内にあるARSC (Arctic Region Supercomputing Center)で開催された。会議録は発行されなかったが、論文の一部はWOMPAT 2003の会議録に収録されている。

会議に参加した筑波大の朴泰祐氏によれば、8月8日、同センターに設置されたCray SX-6（写真は後の第196回の記事にある）を見学したとのことである。8プロセッサ、ピーク64 GFlopsのマシンである。筐体の形は地球シミュレータとは違うが、179回の記事にあるSX-6とはほぼ同じである。結局これがアメリカ国内の唯一のCray SX-6となった（あと6台はカナダに設置）。同センターには、そのほかにT3E、SV1ex、SP2などが設置されている。

20) HOT CHIPS 14（Stanford大学）
1989年から始まった高性能半導体の国際会議HOT CHIPSは14回目のHOT CHIPS 14 (2002)を、2002年8月18日～20日にStanford大学のMemorial Auditoriumで開催した。基調講演2件とパネル討論は以下の通り。

21) ICPP 2002（Vancouver）
第31回目となるICPP 2002 (31st International Conference on Parallel Processing)は、2002年8月20日～23日にカナダのVancouverのThe Renaissance Vancouver Hotel Harboursideで開催された。4年周期の4年目である。主催はIACC (The International Association for Computers and Communications)、共催はOhio State University他である。3件の基調講演が行われた。

22) IFIP Congress 2002（Montréal）
第17回目のIFIP Congress 2002 (World Computer Congress 2002)は、2002年8月25日～29日に、カナダのMontréalで開催された。会議録は10巻にわかれてKluwer社から出版されている。

23) Euro-Par 2002（Paderborn、ドイツ）
第8回目のEuro-Par 2002, Parallel Processing, 8th International Euro-Par Conferenceは、2002年8月27日～30日にドイツのPaderbornで開催された。会議録は、Springer社からLNCS 2400として出版されている。

24) CCGSC 2002 (Lyon)
CCGSC (Clusters and Computational Grid for Scientific Computing)は、1992年から隔年で、アメリカまたはフランスで開催されている。アメリカ側の主催者はJack Dongarra (U. Tennessee Knoxville)である。参加は招待者のみ。1992年は、Workshop on Environments and Tools for Parallel Scientific Computingと題して開かれた。今年も恒例により9月中旬（要確認）にLyonから東の、アルプスの山間いのFaverges（Annecy湖の反対側）で開催された。参加者写真はCCSGC 2006の記録から。参加した松岡聡の話によると、場外で地球シミュレータが話題になり、Ken KennedyはHPFが15 TFlopsも出したことに満足し、Tom Sterlingはコモディティより専用アーキテクチャがよいと言い出したり（BeowulfよりHTMTということか？）、いろいろ盛り上がったとのことである。

25) iGrid 2002（Amsterdam）
これは、高速ネットワークを活用して、世界中の様々な分野の研究者と、広域分散処理、バーチャルリアリティ、大型データベースなどの技術を使って共同研究を行うプロジェクトである。第1回はSC98の研究展示として出され、第2回はINET 2000（パシフィコ横浜）に併設して開催された。今回のiGrid 2002は2002年9月23日～26日にAmsterdam Science and Technology Center (WTCW)で会議に合わせて開催された。

26) Cluster 2002（Chicago）
第4回目となるCluster 2002 (2002 IEEE International Conference on Cluster Computing)は、2002年9月23日～26日にChicagoで開催された。会議録はIEEEから出版されている。

27) EuroPVM-MPI 2002（Linz、オーストリア）
9回目となるEuroPVM-MPI 2002（9th European PVM/MPI Users’ Group Meeting）は2002年9月29日～10月2日にオーストリアのLinzで開催された。9件の招待講演と2件のチュートリアルが行われた。

28) Microprocessor Forum 2002 (San Jose)
2002年10月14日～17日に、カリフォルニア州San Jose Fairmont Hotelで開催されたMicroprocessor Forum 2002は、ITバブル崩壊にもかかわらず超高速CPUのラッシュであった。冒頭の基調講演でIntel FellowのJohn Crawfordは、2007年頃には1B(10⁹)個のトランジスタがチップに集積されると語った。 (HPCwire 2002/10/18) IBM社はPOWER4ベースの64bitプロセッサPowerPC 970の詳細を明らかにし、富士通の井上はSPARC64Vの詳細を発表した。(HPCwre 2002/10/11) (ASCII.JP 2002/10/17) (PC Watch 2002/1017)

29) The Linux HPC Revolution (フロリダ州St. Petersburg)
この会議は、2002年10月23日～25日に、The Linux Clusters Institute (LCI)の主催によりフロリダ州St. Petersburgで開催された。テーマはHPCのためのLinuxクラスタの利用である。協賛はMyricom社とthe Alliance (the National Computational Science Alliance)である。詳細は不明。(HPCwire 2002/5/10)

32) PRDC 2002（つくば市）
PRDC 2002 (Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing)は、2002年12月16日～18日、筑波国際会議場で開催された。この会議は1989年から始まり9回目である。1997年まではPacific Rim International Symposium on Fault-Tolerant Systemsと呼ばれており、隔年開催であった。1999年からは現在の名称に変え、毎年開催している。

33) ICPADS 2002（Zhongli、台湾）
ICPADS 2002 (Ninth International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Systems)は、2002年12月17日～20日に台湾のZhongli（中壢）で開催された。会議録はIEEE/CSから発行されている。

34) HiPC 2002（Bangalore）
HiPC 2002 (9th IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing)は、2002年12月18日～21日にインドのBangaloreのThe Taj Residencyで開催された。12カ国から投稿された145編の投稿論文から57編採択した。基調講演等は以下の通り。会議録はSpringerから出版されている。

次回はISC2002である。Rick Stevensは、1990年代にアメリカで行われたPetaflopsへの議論を総括し、演算性能増大に伴い、メモリ総量とメモリバンド幅がどうスケールするかが問題であると述べた。Top500では地球シミュレータが堂々1位を占めた。
