最前線のコンピュータ技術を発表するComputing Frontiers の第1回がナポリ近くのイスキア島で開催された。Beowulf Clusterの10周年記念イベントがSan Franciscoで行われた。曰く「ベオウルフなんか怖くない」。GPUが科学技術計算に使えるのではないか、という会議が開かれた。CUDA登場の3年前で画期的である。 |
国際会議
1) Globus WORLD 2004 (San Francisco)
第2回のGlobusWORLD であるGlobusWORLD 2004は、2004年1月20日～23日にSan FranciscoのSt. Francis Hotelで開催された。参加者は約450名。1回目はSan Diegoで2003年1月13日～17日。新しいweb serviceの仕様WSRF (Web Service Resource Framework)が初めて発表された。
基調講演としては、eビジネスについてはDaniel Sabbah (IBM)が、eサイエンスについてはIan Foster (ANL)とLarry Smarr (Cal-IT2)が行った。
2) ISSCC 2004 (San Francisco)
第51回目となるISSCC 2004(2004 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference)は、2004年2月15日～19日にSan Francisco Marriot Hotelにおいて“Embedded-Systems for a Connected World”のテーマで開催された。主催者は、IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society, IEEE San Francisco Section, Bary Area CouncilおよびPennsylvania大学である。電子会議録はIEEE Xploreに置かれている。
3) PPSC 2004 (San Francisco)
第11回目となるPPSC 2004 (the Eleventh Conference on Parallel Processing for Scientific Computing)は、2004年2月25日～27日に、カリフォルニア州San FranciscoのHyatt at Fisherman’s Wharfで開催された。PP04という略称も使われている。これまで奇数年に開催されてきたが、2003年を飛ばして2004年開催となった。会議録が発行されたかどうかは不明である。以下の招待講演が行われた。

4) CGO 2004 (Palo Alto)
第2回となるCGO 2004 (2004 International Symposium on Code Generation and Optimization with Special Emphasis on Feedback-Directed and Runtime Optimization)は、2004年3月21日～24日にPalo AltoのThe Sheraton Hotel and Conference Centerで開催された。主催はIEEE/CS TC-uARCHとACM SIGMICRO、後援はACM SIGPLANであった。2件の基調講演が行われた。

5) ARCS 2004 (Augsburg)
第17回目となるARCS 2004 (International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems 2004)は、“Organic and Pervasive Computing”のタイトルで、2004年3月23日～26日にドイツのAugsburgで開催された。会議録はSpringer社からLNCS 2981として発行されている。
6) HPC User Forum
HPC User Forumは1999年にIDCを軸に設立され、HPC産業に関する問題を取り上げている。年2回はアメリカ国内で、他に国外でもフォーラムを開催している。4月中旬に2日間開催されたForumでは、自動車、航空機、造船、防衛などにおけるHPCによる構造解析について論じた。
9月下旬には、Tucsonで開催された。
10月13日にはCERNで開催された(HPCwire 2004/10/1)(HPCwire 2004/10/22)。
7) Computing Frontiers 04 (Ischia, Italy)
2004 International Conference on Computing Frontiers – CF’04は、2004年4月14日～16日にイタリアのIschia島のHotel Continental Termeで開催された。このシリーズの第1回で、このあと毎年開催されている。
8) CCGrid 2004 (Chicago)
CCGrid 2004 (IEEE International Symposium on Cluster Computing and the Grid)は、2004年4月19日～22日にChicago で開催された。Brisbane (2001)、Berlin (2002)、Tokyo (2003)に続く4回目である。参加者は200名強。前3回とは異なりACMは共催していない（2009年から復活）。組織委員長はCharlie Catlett (ANL)とPete Bechman (ANL)、名誉組織委員長はIan Foster (ANL)、プログラム委員長はPete Beckman、プログラム副委員長はDavid Abramson (Monash University, Australia)とSameer Shende (Univ. Oregon, USA)であった。会議録はIEEEから出版されている。
9) COOL Chips VII (横浜)

12) ICCP6 and CCP2003（北京）
IUPAPの下に実施される計算物理に関する国際会議CCP2003 (Conference on Computational Physics 2003)は中国の西安で7月に計画されていたが、SARSの蔓延により延期され、2004年5月23日～28日に、北京において、ICCP6と共同開催の形で開催された。テーマは、“Dominance of information technology in the global intellectual and economic landscapes in the 21st century”である。会議録は、“Computational Physics: Proceedings of the Joint Conference of ICCP6 And CCP2003”として、Rinton Pressから発行されている。
13) GridToday 04 (Philadelphia)
電子ジャーナルGRIDtodayの主催でGridToday 04が2004年5月24日～26日、アメリカのPhiladelphia Convention Centerで開催された。26団体による展示が行われた。400人が参加した。参加者数では日本のGrid World 2004の方が遙かに多い。
14) HPDC-13 (Honolulu)
第13回目となるHPDC-13 (The Thirteenth IEEE International Symposium on High-Performance Distributed Computing)は、2004年6月4日～6日にハワイのHonoluluで開催された。GGF11（2004年6月6日～10日）との連続開催である。ワークショップCLADE (Challenges of Large Applications in Distributed Environments)が併設された。基調講演は2件。

22) HPC Asia 2004 (大宮)
HPC Asia 2004、第7回アジア太平洋地域高性能計算とグリッドに関する国際会議 (High Performance Computing and Grid in Asia-Pacific Region) は、2004年7月20日～22日に、大宮ソニックシティ（埼玉県さいたま市大宮区） において開催された。国内228名、国外15カ国84名の計312名が参加し、また展示会場には136名の一般見学者が訪れた。組織委員長は筆者、プログラム委員長は佐藤三久（筑波大）、実行委員長は関口智嗣（産総研）、ワークショップ委員長は朴泰祐（筑波大）、国際アドバイザリ委員長はDavid Kahaner (ATIP)であった。主催は情報処理学会HPC研究会とIEEE/CS Japan Chapter、協賛はグリッド協議会、日本シミュレーション学会、日本流体力学会、情報処理学会アーキテクチャ研究会、日本計算工学会、日本応用数理学会、日本物理学会であった。
基調講演は渡辺貞（NEC）が“Lessons learned from the Development of Supercomputer”と題して講演した。招待講演は、以下の6件。

一般講演では、12カ国から79件の論文投稿があり、プログラム委員会は46件を採択した。分野別内訳は、グリッドのミドルウェアやグリッド応用関連15件、応用分野シミュレーション関連14件、アーキテクチャ、MPI通信、スケジューリングなどHPC基盤関連14件、画像処理関連3件であった。

本会議に併設して7件のワークショップが開催された。また、企業展示は17社、研究展示は7件であった。『応用数理』に開催報告がある。IEEE/CSから会議録が発行されている。写真は会議録の表紙。
会期中40度に近い猛暑日があり、隣接するホテルから会場入り口までのわずか10mを走らずにはおれなかったことを覚えている。（写真は組織委員長挨拶）
23) Beowulf Cluster10周年「ベオウルフなんか怖くない」(San Francisco)
1994年、Thomas SterlingとDonald Becker (NASA)らはBeowulf clusterの概念を提唱した。汎用品のハード、汎用品のネットワーク、オープンなOSやミドルウェアによって構成されたWS/PCクラスタのことである。Beowulfとはイギリス文学最古の伝承の一つで、英雄Beowulfの冒険を語る叙事詩である。スーパーコンピュータという怪物を退治する英雄だからであろうか。
2004年8月4日、Beowulfの10周年記念イベントがSan Franciscoで行われた。曰く、”Who’s afraid of the big bad Beowulf? “これはディズニーの“The Three Little Pigs”「三匹の子豚」に出て来る歌”Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf?”（「♪狼なんか怖くない、怖くないったら怖くない」）をもじったようである。
Hotwired誌でMichelle Delioはこう書いている。「今では誰も怖くない。しかし、クラスタ型スーパーコンピュータのBeowulfが10年前に初めて登場したとき、科学者たちのコミュニティは、畏怖と嫌悪の入り混じった感情でこれを迎えた。『スーパーコンピュータ偏重の科学者コミュニティによるBeowulf projectに対する当初の反応は、かなり否定的なものだった』と、最初にBeowulf projectを立ち上げた1人であるDonald Becker (NASA)は振り返る。」
「科学者たちの反応は、予想された『じゃあ、やってみろよ』的な無関心をはるかに通り越し、市販のコンピュータを使用したクラスタでより優れたプラットフォームを開発しようという動きにあからさまに異議を唱えるものだった」とBeckerは話した。「しかしどうしたわけか、今では皆がBeowulfの支持する側に回ったようだ」
Beckerは、San Franciscoで8月4日(米国時間)の夜に開催された、Beowulfの誕生10周年を祝うパーティーに出席した。パーティーでは、デザインを一新したBeowulf projectのウェブサイトも披露された。(Hotwired 2004/8/6)（Hotwired 2004/8/17）
24) Workshop on General Purpose Computing on Graphics Processors (Los Angeles)
2004年8月7日から、Los AngelesのWilshire Grand Hotelにおいて研究会“Workshop on General Purpose Computing on Graphics Processors (GP2)”が開催された。今ならGPGPUというところであろう。ちなみに、2008年から始まっているWorkshop on General Purpose Processing on Graphics Processing Units (GPGPU)とは別のシリーズである。
グラフィック処理の方式に無理矢理合わせて行列積計算を行った報告がSC2001であったが、そのころはやっとprogrammable shaderが出たところで、演算精度も不十分であった。2004年頃には16本のpixel pipelineで32 bit浮動小数演算が行え、条件分岐や反復なども可能になっている。GP2の実行委員には、ATIやNVIDIAの有名人も名を連ねていた。西川善治の報告によると、「ノースカロライナ大学のFrederick P.Brooks,Jr.氏はGPUが仮想メモリを取り扱えないことに苦言を呈し，並列コンピュータを用いた原子レベルでの物理シミュレーションを研究しているLawrence Livermore National LabのMark Seager氏は，GPUが例外処理能力に乏しいことを問題視していた。高いプログラマビリティと高い並列性能を持ったGPUではあるが、意外にも『いまだ制限が多く、どういう目的で使えば効果的なのかは模索中のところがある』という旨の意見が多かったそうである。」後で述べるように、SC2004では、32台のGPUのクラスタ上でLattice Boltzmann Modelのシミュレーションを行った研究が発表された。
CUDAが公開されたのはこの3年後の2007年6月23日である。

第33回目となるICPP 2004 (33rd International Conference on Parallel Processing)は、2004年8月15日～18日にカナダ・ケベック州のMontrealで開催された。2回目の4年周期の2年目である。主催はIACC (The International Association for Computers and Communications)、共催はOhio State University (USA)とMcGill University (Canada)である。以下の基調講演が行われた。

Camp (SNL)を中心に企画されたものと思われる。参加は30名。数十年のうちにZettaflops (1021 Flops = 1000 Exa Flops)のスーパーコンピュータが必要になると予想されるが、現在の技術では物理的に不可能である。このワークショップでは、応用分野（気象を例として取り上げている）からの必要性、現状の技術からの限界、将来のアーキテクチャ、プログラミングとソフトウェア、新しい論理方式（可逆的論理など）が議論され、最後のパネル討論”How much should we change supercomputing to enable the applications that are important to us, and how fast”で、今後のロードマップが議論されている。各講演のスライドのリンクは切れているが、論文は残っている。
Zettaflopsを掲げてはいるが、実際にはExaFlopsへのキックオフであったと考えられる。地球シミュレータが最高速（40 TFlops）というときに、ExaFlopsを目指しているところがすごい。その後毎年開催されている。
34) AACC 2004 (Kathmandu)
AACC 2004 (Second Asian Applied Computing Conference)が、2004年10月29日～31日にネパールのKathmanduで開催されることになり、筆者は依頼によりプログラム委員を引き受けた。出席しようと思っていたが、8月31日夜から1日にかけて、Kathmanduでは、イラクで武装勢力に拘束されていた労働者12人が殺された件にからんで、残虐な犯行に激怒した学生らがイスラム教のモスク前などでタイヤを燃やし、抗議デモを行い、軍隊の装甲車が出た、というニュースを聞き、怖じ気付いて取りやめた。東北大学の西関隆夫教授は、招待講演を行ったとのことである。会議録がSpringerから出版されている。筆者の名前も編集者に入っている。

2004年11月6日から12日までPittsburghで開催されたSC2004については項を改めて記す。
36) HiPC 2004 (Bangalore)
11回目のHiPC 2004 (The 11th Annual International Conference on High Performance Computing)は、2004年12月19日～22日にインドのBangaloreのthe Taj Residencyで開催された。以下の基調講演が行われた。

37) ICCM 2004 (Singapore)
第1回目のICCM 2004（International Conference on Computational Methods）が、2004年12月にSingaporeで開催された。Prof. G.R. Liuによって始められたようであるが、詳細は不明。第2回は2007年広島で。
次回は、HeidelbergのISC2004とPittsburghのSC2004である。SC2004の企業展示では、IBM社、Cray社、SGI社などが印象に残った。去年に引き続いてChina/HPC Workshopが開催された。
