HPCの歩み50年（第215回）－2012年(i)－
東北大学では「震災からの日本の復興・再生、安全・安心、ものづくりに資するスーパーコンピューティング技術」をテーマにWSSPが催された。最後のIESPが神戸の理化学研究所計算科学研究機構で開催された。Computing Frontier 2011はいつものIschia島ではなく、サルデーニア島南部のCagliariで開催された。
国際会議
1) ISSCC 2012
第59回目となるISSCC（IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference）2012は、2012年2月19日～23日にカリフォルニア州San Francisco Marriott Marquis Hotelで開催された。投稿論文は628件、採択論文は202件であるが、地域別には、極東の企業や研究機関を筆頭著者とする論文は73件で全体の36%を占め、アメリカの68件を上回った。国別には、アメリカ65件、韓国30件、日本は25件であった。19日はチュートリアルが9件行われた。また、2件のForumと2件のStudent Research Previewも行われた。日本語でも多くの報告がWeb上に掲載されている。PC Watchによると、相変化メモリが記憶容量でDRAMを追い抜いたことが大事件だと述べている。基調講演は4件であった。

2) ARCS 2012
第25回目となる、ARCS 2012 (Interntional Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems 2012)は、2012年2月28日～3月2日にMünchen工科大学のGarchingキャンパスで開催された。会議録はSpringer社からLNCS 7179として出版されている。
3) Teraflops Workshop
第15回目となる、Workshop on Sustained Simulation Performance（旧Teraflop Workshop）は、2012年3月22日（木）～23日（金）に東北大学サイバーサイエンスセンターにて開催された。前年の東日本大震災を受け、被災地でもある仙台において、特に「震災からの日本の復興・再生、安全・安心、ものづくりに資するスーパーコンピューティング技術」をテーマとした。プログラムは以下の通り。

4) ATIP/A*CRC Workshop on Accelerator Technologies
表記のワークショップが、2012年5月7日（月）～10日（木）に、シンガポールのBiopolisにあるMatrix Buildingにおいて、“Does Asia Lead the Way?”のタイトルで開催された。筆者は”HPC and its Industrial Applications in Japan — from K Computer to Exaflops”という講演を行った。日本からの参加者数名は、8日、NUS (National University of Singapore)のWongさん（黄栄輝、Wong Weng-Fai、昔、理研の後藤特別研究室の研究員）がセントーサ島のカジノに案内してくださるなど、大変お世話になった。われわれ外国籍はタダで入れるが、シンガポール国民はSG$100（7000円位？）を払わなければならないので、Wongさんは外で待っていた。まあ、掛けをする時間はなかった。カジノの地下の片隅に、“Winners’ Corner”という一角があり、カップヌードルなどの自動販売機が置いてあったが、これは、本当は“Loosers’ Corner”で、すってんてんになった人が命を繋ぐためのコーナーのようであった。日本にもこんなものができるのであろうか。
9日（水）は以下の通り研究拠点の見学をおこなった。
(a) 水曜午前
Matrix Building の近くの、BII (BioInformatic Institute), ETC (Experimental Therapeutic Centre), GIS (Genome Institute Singapore)を見学した。A*STARに研究所、大学、企業を集めて、政府主導で強力な連携を構築しているところが印象的であった。
(b) 水曜午後
午後は、FusionopolisにあるA*CRC (A*STAR Computational Resource Centre)。IHPC （Institute for High Performance Computing)、DSI (Date Storage Institute)で、貸し切りバスで案内された。直線で1キロもないので歩ける距離である。富士通のクラスタが沢山あり、日本語の注意書きがあったりして面白かった。
IHPCは昔、External Advisorをしていたことがあったが、そのころは、HPCのリソースを設置運用するとともに、研究も行っていたが、現在ではリソースはA*CRCが担当し、IHPCは応用研究だけのようでである。1面の３Dディスプレーで、都市のミクロ気候や火事、津波、毒ガスの飛散などのシミュレーションの可視化をやっていた。
DSIは、いわゆるデータサイエンスの研究所で、データ保存のサービスをやっているわけではない、とのことであった。
Fusionopolisは奇妙な形をした26階ほどのツインタワーで、23階が空中庭園になっていた。そこから、Biopolisもジュロン地区の工業団地もNUSも港湾施設もよく見えた。北から黒雲が押し寄せて来るのが見えたが、案の定Matrix buildingに戻った5時頃、猛烈な雷雨となった。こんな曲線ばかりの部屋をサーバ室にするのは大変だと思った。
BiopolisとFusionopolisで大規模な学園都市を目指しているようである。
(c) 水曜夜（南洋理工大学）
5時半にまたバスに乗り、NTU (Nanyang Technical University 南洋理工大学）に行った。だいぶ西の方で、バスで雨の中30分ほど掛かった。地図を見たら、MRT東西線の終点Joo Koonの近くである。趣旨は分からなかったが、そこのInstitute for Media Innovationでさる国際会議のためのデモがあり、デモだけを見に行ったことになる。
中々盛会で、脳波でアニメーションをコントロールする実験とか、衣装の布の動きを裸眼立体ディスプレーで見せるとか、全周型の円形CAVEなどが印象に残った。全周型の円形CAVEは、300度が見えるCAVEで5台のプロジェクタで映していた。中国の建物のvirtual tourは、自分でも操作してみたが、なかなか迫力がありった。
そこでケータリングの食事があり、これを食べてから、ホテルで荷物をピックアップし、MRTで空港に向かった。ガイドブックでは勧められないとあるが、チャンギ空港までMRTを試してみた。土地勘さえあれば快適であった。
夜行便で、10日（木）の午前8時半ごろに関西空港にもどった。
5) CGO 2012
第10回目となるCGO 2012 (The International Symposium on Code Generation and Optimization)は、2012年3月31日～4月4日にカリフォルニア州San Jose Hilton Hotelで開催された。以下の基調講演が行われた。
